IT'S NOT 'GOOD' AND IT'S NOT 'BAD'
Many years ago I went to attend and participate in an initiation at a Buddhist Temple in Wisconsin. Lama's would come from Tibet to perform these and other functions at the Temple.
We were told that after the initiation if we had any questions we should wait in line out side the Lama's room. After quite some time a monk then escorted me to a room were an interpreter was to present my question to the Lama.
I explained to the interpreter that many times while gazing at my reflection in the mirror two different entities appeared.
One was very Godly beautiful and Angelic looking, while the other was Demonic and grotesque.
The interpreter then translated my concern to the Lama and he instantly replied in Sanscrit the following words:
IT'S NOT 'GOOD' AND IT'S NOT 'BAD'
This type of answer was the 'Middle Way' or 'Center' approach so that one does not make a 'choice'.
You see by 'Accepting or Approving' one we are 'Rejecting or Disapproving' of the other.
In other words by taking the 'Middle Path' we are not getting caught up in the 'involutionary duality' way of thinking that one is 'GOOD' and the other is 'BAD'.
This way of thinking creates 'blocks' to 'higher consciousness' resulting in stress, dis-ease and unhappiness in general.
In a nutshell as Carl Jung so eloquently stated in one of his many works: The essence of the conscious mind is discrimination which blocks and inhibits the flow of the subconscious and the higher faculties.
These seven words; IT'S NOT 'GOOD' AND IT'S NOT 'BAD' had a profound affect on my life.
Somehow I have a feeling that the Lama addressed everyone with this exact same answer:
IT'S NOT 'GOOD' AND IT'S NOT 'BAD' regardless of the question asked.
DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
One awakens to different sides of the same reality. Like the moon reflecting in a pool of
water, one must see the whole reflection and realize that another side exists, a side not
reflecting.
This recognition of a dark side of the moon, completely illuminates the object and
one knows it fully. In the Buddha way, understanding the dual sides of all things awakens one
to the complete reality of the entity and the deeper, ultimate reality of emptiness.
One embraces 'good and bad', hate and love because they are ultimately the same. One generates a sense of
compassion for all weeds and flowers because these distinctions manifest emptiness.
Dogen teaches that compassion, Enlightenment and deeper understanding of the twofold truth stem
from realizing the pervasive emptiness that encompasses all distinctions and dichotomies.
The acceptance and awareness of the true, interdependent world of dualities illuminates the
ultimate. One can realize the true nature of the discursive world because of the infinite
emptiness that sustains and embraces all duality.
Dogen's idea of emptiness acts as reflecting pool that envelopes and creates the reflection.
Without the pool, there would be no reflection.
Without duality, the ultimate remains hidden.
